Description

The HEPA filter is the core of any purifier so we chose one that was backed by data rather than by grade. Grades are based on the ability to trap size 0.3 and above - all HEPAs will trap virtually 100% of nanoparticles (down to 0.005).

The tighter the HEPA fibre, the more resistance to airflow and without a powerful fan, it really doesn't matter which HEPA grade you choose.

We tested over 10 different HEPA materials before deciding on using an H13, 99.95% grade HEPA filter. That means it can capture 99.95% of those particles above (and below) 0.3 microns!

FAQs

How often should I change the filter?
Our HEPA filters have been tested to last 4,600 (high) – 5,250 (low) hours which translates to 19-22 months based on running for 8 hours a day. Note that this test was carried out in Beijing air. This means that if you live in a less polluted area and run your purifier on a lower setting, the filter will last you much longer - possibly up to 2 years!

Is this a medical-grade filter?
While we avoid using terms like medical grade for the Blast (which actually uses a HEPA13 filter), the more established purifier companies aggressively push this. Our HEPAs are data-backed based on performance and are used in hospitals and clinics in many countries.

Can I purchase the standard HEPA version and add a carbon filter at a later date if I need to?
Yes, no problem. All Smart Air purifiers are designed to work with just the HEPA filter, the Carbon Filter or both so completely interchangeable depending on your needs. The more filters you use, the more resistance in the airflow plus you will need to factor in the filter replacements. This is why we leave you to choose what you need, when you need it.

Can the filters be washed?
Smart Air Filters conducted tests using 4 used HEPA filters and found that washing the filters reduces its effectiveness. According to the data, we should never wash our HEPA filters. You can check out the data here: https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/wash-clean-hepa/. However the Blast units both have pre-filters to prolong the life of the HEPA filters. Make sure to periodically vacuum the prefilter, otherwise it may affect the HEPA’s filtration performance.

What is the HEPA filter made from?
Data shows that glass fibre filters can shed more fibres than synthetic filters, while the number of particles shed by both types of filter is very small, Smart Air chooses to use synthetic fibres to lower the risk. Smart Air uses PP+PET material in all our HEPA filters.

Can the HEPA filter be recycled?
We really wish it could be recycled but at the moment it is not possible. If you have any creative ideas or suggestions on how we can do so, let us know! The new MkII Blast units use an upgraded cardboard frame HEPA filter with the metal mesh removed. This lighter design makes it easier to handle, lowers shipping costs, is more environmentally friendly design and has increased recyclability.
